Community
Outreach and Education
LVCIL
strives to educate others on the assets of persons with disabilities. This
includes going out into the community for speaking engagements, presentations,
and informative sessions at organizations and events throughout the Lehigh
Valley.
At any given moment you may find one of our staff members attending an event,
hosting a seminar, or making a presentation at any location throughout the
Lehigh Valley. You may have seen us at Coca-Cola Park, or at LCCC, or at a
community expo, or out in the community... That's because we're everywhere and
we're committed to educate others on the independent living philosophy and to
promote disability awareness!
If you'd like LVCIL to present at your organization, conduct a seminar, or lead
a discussion, please call Greg Bott at 610-770-9781 ext. 120 or email
gregbott@lvcil.org. In the past we've
presented on everything from our services and programs to Deaf History and
self-advocacy. We are extremely flexible and willing to lead any discussion!
In addition to our general community outreach presentations, we also offer these
programs:
Common
Playgrounds is a
disability sensitivity education program for elementary and middle school youth.
The program is set-up as a game show entitled "What Do YOU Know About People
With Disabilities!" and includes various interactive segments designed to
get the students involved and engaged with people with disabilities. Segments
include "Meal or No Meal," "The Dating Game," and our version of "Idol." The
program is fun and informative. Plus, prizes are awarded to participating
students!
Common Playgrounds is available for school assemblies, after-school programs,
and summer youth programs. The program is designed to be flexible and can be
adapted to fit any time constraints. We also offer a poster contest as a part of
the program (optional). Please visit the Common Playgrounds page for more
information.
